My Story
I have spent the past 30 years as a middle and elementary school guidance counselor. During that time, I’ve met and worked with thousands of amazing kids and families.
“We value her insight and her years of experience, and have continued to use her as a resource now that our son is in high school.” - Mother of Student
After retiring from the Ann Arbor Public Schools in 2016, I started my own consulting business. In that time, I also worked at Frankfort Elementary School in Northern Michigan. I retired, again, in 2024.
Since COVID, I have continued my work virtually. Meeting people on Zoom has provided great flexibility and has allowed me to see people across the country. I just met with a client at a college in New York!
I hold an MA in School Guidance and Counseling and a BA in Physical Education and Health. Prior to counseling I taught Physical and Health Education for almost a decade.
Disclaimer: I am not a licensed, professional counselor. I am not a Ph.D., LLPC, LPC, MSW, LMSW. I have a Masters Degree in School Guidance Counseling. I am able to consult based on my experience as a middle school educator.
My Approach With Kids Post COVID
“I felt safe and comfortable talking to her and her guidance was always immensely helpful.” - Middle School Student
Since COVID, much of my work with kids has been around anxiety. It is, by far, the number one issue that I help people with. There is no one way to alleviate anxiety. I have found that multiple strategies are necessary and every individual is different. My goal is to help people manage their anxiety so it doesn’t get in the way of leading a productive life.
My Approach with Parents
I am also available to consult with parents who are trying to better understand their child and what is going on during the middle and high school years. I can help parents gain perspective and normalize what they are experiencing with their children. I offer parents tools and strategies they can use in various situations.
"She guided both of our children...to become the confident, successful young adults they are today. We love you, Jan!" - Father of 2 Students
